Special Collections and Archives Department

The Special Collections Department is located on the third floor of the Eugene McDermott Library. The Library administration established the Special Collections Department in the mid-1970s to house rare books acquired by the library. In nearly thirty years Special Collections has grown to include the History of Aviation Collection, the Wineburgh Philatelic Research Library, and the Louise B. Belsterling Botanical Library.

The History of Aviation Collection is the largest section of the department, consisting of a world-class aeronautical archive and library. The Wineburgh Philatelic Research Library is an outstanding regional resource for both philatelic and postal history. The Louise B. Belsterling Library holds an extraordinary collection of rare botanical books, including the library's oldest volume.

Navigating Chaos: Aviation's Response on 9/11 Symposium Overview

McDermott Library's Special Collections hosted a symposium featuring the air controllers and pilots who played central roles in events surrounding the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The moderator was Lynn Spencer, author of the popular book, "Touching History: The Untold Story of the Drama That Unfolded in the Skies Over America on 9/11." This critically acclaimed 2008 book recounts the nation's aviation response during and in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Despite an unprecedented disruption to aviation business, nearly 5,000 aircraft eventually landed safely. There were no midair collisions, landing crashes or other aviation mishaps, due in part to the actions of the panelists who participated at this event:
